Jim Carrey’s sister Rita dies aged 68, one-year after wedding
Rita Carrey, the sister of famed actor and comedian Jim Carrey, died at the age of 68, just over a year after getting married. Rita’s husband Alex announced the tragic news on her Facebook page, writing that his wife died on November 14, “surrounded by her family and friends.”
“It is with heavy heart and my deepest sadness that Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14, 2024, surrounded by her family and friends,” he said, noting that the couple had been together for 16 years before marrying in an outdoor wedding last July.
“We traveled the world and met many people who we now consider friends. Rita was my dearest friend, lover, and lovely wife,” Alex added. “Rita always had a caring soul and wanted to serve everyone, including complete strangers. Rita’s favorite holiday was Christmas, but it was every day for her, so she established a fundraiser to benefit a local charity.”Rita was one of Jim Carrey’s three older siblings.
The actor has a brother named John and another sister named Patricia. All four were born and raised in Canada.
Rita spoke with SiriusXM 167 in 2015 on being the sister of one of the world’s most famous performers. “It’s not hard,” she said. “Every day, people ask me…” Because they usually say “Jim Carrey’s sister,” I changed my name to JCS, which stands for Jesus Christ Superstar, because I never get: “Oh, you’re Rita?”
“But I’ve been asked about Jim on a daily basis for the past twenty-five years. Every day, someone will certainly say something like “you’re Jim Carrey’s sister” or “you look like someone I know”. So it does not disturb me. Jim has yet to offer a remark regarding his sister’s death.
