Parents Chose to Remove Their Baby’s Birthmark to Avoid the Rudeness of Others
Vienna Rose Brookshaw was born with a distinctive birthmark, a type of skin condition known as congenital melanocytic nevi. While her parents, Celine and Daniel, loved every part of their daughter, they couldn’t help but worry about the potential for her to be bullied because of it. This concern led them to face a difficult and controversial decision.
When Vienna was born with a sizable birthmark on her forehead and between her eyebrows, her mother, Celine, was immediately filled with worry. She wondered if there was something she had done to cause the rare condition and felt compelled to have it removed. Since such a procedure is typically considered cosmetic, insurance didn’t cover the costs. Both Celine and Daniel were determined to prevent their daughter from facing ridicule, as they had already noticed people staring when they went out. “We went out daily with her, and we got a few stares,” Celine revealed. She also feared that Vienna might one day resent them for not acting sooner to help her.
The Birthmark Causes Conflict
Concerned about their daughter’s future mental well-being, Celine and Daniel turned to crowdfunding for assistance. Within just 24 hours, they reached their $52,000 goal, but the costs continued to rise due to inflation, pushing them to raise an additional $27,000. They eventually had enough to cover the expenses for hospital stays and travel, but they faced yet another obstacle. The surgeon they approached refused to perform the procedure, arguing that Vienna should be old enough to make the decision herself. Fortunately, the birthmark was not cancerous or a health threat, but Celine and Daniel were still frustrated by the medical team’s refusal to proceed with the surgery.
“We love seeing her grow on her journey, and we can’t wait for the day that she does grow up and can speak for herself so we can hear her opinion. We’d love her no matter what, even if we did keep the birthmark,” Celine explained.
Surgery and Recovery
Eventually, Celine and Daniel were able to arrange the surgery to remove the birthmark. The procedure was successful, but the family faced more challenges in the months that followed. They had to travel frequently for follow-up appointments to ensure that the scar did not become infected or pose any health risks.
An Outpouring of Support
Thankfully, Vienna has had no complications since the surgery. She has received an outpouring of love and support from over 45,000 Instagram followers. Many praised her courage before and after the surgery. “What a brave angel Vienna is!!” one follower commented on a pre-surgery photo. Another shared, “She’s going to have such a better life and easier growing up like that.” Others expressed their admiration, noting how beautiful Vienna was both before and after the procedure.
Understanding Congenital Melanocytic Nevi
Congenital melanocytic nevi, the condition Vienna was born with, occurs in about 1 in every 20,000 newborns. These birthmarks typically appear at birth or within the first few weeks of life and can sometimes have excessive hair growth along with a dark spot or mole. While moles are generally harmless and don’t usually cause health concerns, it’s still important to follow up with a dermatologist to rule out rare conditions, like neurocutaneous melanosis, which can occur in some cases.
A Decision Made with Love
Vienna was a happy baby with a brave spirit, and despite the invasive nature of the surgery, she handled it well. Though Celine and Daniel understand the public’s concerns about Vienna’s autonomy in making this decision, they felt it was the right choice for their daughter. Today, Vienna is thriving, happy, and healthy. Her scar has healed beautifully and will likely continue to fade as she grows older.
The journey, while difficult at times, reflects the parents’ love and dedication to ensuring their daughter’s happiness and well-being.
